How Much are You Guys paying for Propane?
 

I got my house tank filled today by the delivery service. It was $2.76 per gallon. This is in Northern California. How much are you guys paying in other parts of the country? Just curious, thanks.

I don't have bulk propane, just a few grill tanks.
I went to have two filled last weekend and they were $19 each!

Up from $14 each last fall.... 36% increase!!!

Nah, I think they are 3.2-3.5 gal.. in that range.

Over twice what you paid for in bulk.

They call them 20# tanks.. does that mean they hold 20#'s of propane?
I checked the density of LPG and it's 4.22 lbs/gal so a 20#'s/ 4.22 = 4.74 gallons

This variation in prices is all very interesting. I notice as far as gasoline goes, California has the highest prices most of the time, and also has alot of refineries in this state. I know the taxes are high, I think about .40 to .48c per gallon. As far as the propane goes, what is making it so expensive in Texas and Florida? I figured you guys would have a cheaper price, not more expensive. 4 bucks a gallon, that's crazy! Time to back up da truck! LOL!

There's a local feed store here that was advertising propane for $2.55/gallon, no limit. I should have bought a few more tanks and had them filled. Been meaning to do that for preps sake.

I just re-checked the ad, and the sale price is good til May 31st. So I got time still. The only thing is that those grill sized tanks are $20 to $25 bucks apiece. Hey Mountain Man, pick me up a couple propane tanks at the flea market would ya?

I'm having a hard time believing that some place in Ca. has the cheapest propane so far. I'm not usually that lucky.

3.00/gal here last fillup in the big tank.

A 20lb grill size bottle does hold just shy of 5 gallons as TLM calculated.

They are 20# tanks, but you are only supposed to fill them up partially, I think 80%. So they don't hold 5 gallons.

I've been paying over $4 per gallon to refill my 20# tanks.

I pay $16/fill, which comes to $4.21/gallon.

Nope....they put them on a scale when they fill them and put in exactly 20lbs. If you look on the collar, you will see the weight of the bottle....they add that to 20lb, set the scale for that, and that is your fill up.....which is ALSO why you don't want to take tanks in with any gas in them.....you'll be buying your own gas back again :D

Same thing with the 100lb ones....the empty weight on the tank is about 75-80lbs ( depends on the tank manufacturer ) and they put exactly 100lbs over that in them.

The 80% figure you are referring to is for a large tank rated in gallons....for example, a 500 gallon ABOVE GROUND tank, they will only fill to 400 gallons....80%....that tank underground, they will fill to 90% ( that probably varies by company and location )

Little note on the 20lb bottles.....if you buy used ones, you 'may' have trouble getting them filled if they don't have the triangle shaped handle on the valve, which means they have the overflow safety type valve in them. They aren't supposed to fill the old type, but many places simply look the other way and do....like where I get mine filled......but if you go to an actual GAS company for a fill, they may not do it...so before you buy up a bunch of old 20lb tanks, you might be aware of that....

A buddy of mine ran out of propane for his BBQ, and borrowed my grill tank. When he was going to return it to me, he said he would give me a full one back. I'm glad I asked, cause he was going to one of those places that you just exchange your tank, for a different, FULL one. I told him Bullshit, that tank of mine is brand new. I don't want you coming back with someone else's rust bomb to give to me!

Just filled a 250 gallon tank last week for $2.85 per gal. in SE Florida. We shopped around. Prices varied significantly up to around $3.85 per gal.

Well,I got a great deal on my home delivered propane a week or so ago at $2.76, but not yesterday. I bought two new 20 gal tanks at Wally World ($26.59 ea.) then headed to the feed store, where propane is advertised for $2.55/gal all this month. That place was a madhouse! Never knew so many people around here had livestock. Mainly horses I'm guessing. Anyway, the guy tells me since my tanks have never been filled before, they have to be purged of air, and they don't do that! So, I have to go to one of the major propane suppliers in town, and they lay me away $3.59/gal. They were supposed to charge me $5.00 ea to purge the tanks, but the He/She creature who filled my tanks (It's just Pat!) forgot to note it to my advantage. So, two brand new 20 gal tanks filled cost me $90.00! I did pick up one of their brochures for their underground tanks, looks like the way to go.

That's how much mine WOULD have been, had I been able to fill up at the discount price. GW, I was actually looking to see if her/his name tag said "PAT". If it did, I would have lost it right there! LOL!
